There are over hundreds – possibly thousands – of natural gas transportation ships around the world, attesting to the fact that the fossil fuel has certainly garnered the attention of a lot of oil and fuel firms around the world. Like other fuels, it is capable of powering machines like electrical appliances, cars, generators and stoves. That said, how does it fare compared to other types of fossil fuel? Well, let’s cut to the chase and learn what we all need to know:
Natural gas vs liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)
Natural gas transportation ships do not transport LPG. Why? Well, that’s because LPG is different from natural gas, contrary to a lot of people may believe. Natural gas is mainly composed of lighter gases, namely ethane and methane while LPG is composed of heavier ones like propane and butane. These have different combustion characteristics, meaning one cannot simply be substituted for another. Liquefied petroleum gas is commonly being used in stoves around the world, although it is also powering ones in the United States.
As a fuel for transport machines
Although natural gas transportation ships and cars are a rarity, they are steadily taking a foothold. Some firms and businessmen are even pushing
for it to be a fuel source to substitute diesel. In the United States where natural gas is abundant, a lot of people are using a natural gas and LPG hybrid to run cars. However, doing so requires the car to be converted and tweaked in order to run using the gas. Though as of now it is not possible to use it on larger machines, it is possible in the near future – studies are currently underway.
Compared to diesel and gasoline, natural gas is more cost-effective. Though the mechanism used to convert cars to run it is rather expensive, in the long run, it could spell the difference between financial abundance or doom. Natural gas prices range and fluctuate for less than $2 a gallon while diesel and gasoline is priced $4 or higher. It could cut your refilling costs by half annually – a dramatic and welcome change considering today’s economy.
One of the main reasons why natural gas transportation ships are delivering oil around the world is to help out the environment. Of course, people selling natural gas are after profit – that said however, due to their efforts, little by little, ozone depletion is reduced dramatically. Unlike other fossil fuels, natural gas and LPG do not emit harmful carbon dioxide. As you may have learned in primary school, carbon dioxide is the primary air pollutant and poses great danger to both the environment and human health.
Overall, compared to other fossil fuels, natural gas is certainly a better choice and should be prioritized. It has all the advantages in cost, environmental impact and usability, which makes a lot of people wonder why it is not being used as much as diesel and gasoline. Today, you better start thinking about converting your cars to natural gas!
